Getting Back on Track

What a pun for a title... I'm rewriting the pilot, almost finished with the second draft. I'm proud of it but as soon as I start discussing it with someone I realize all the character problems. I'm really struggling with creating a motivation for the main character's actions. There's some funny stuff in there though and potential and the plotting isn't terrible. The most important thing is lacking the most I think. I did hear some good advice that the first episode should really be the third episode which was helpful. The first act is completely new basically but the second will be more like the original pilot.
